Judge Rex Marvel serves our community as a District Court Judge working in Domestic, Criminal, and Juvenile Court. Judge Marvel was appointed to the bench by Governor Roy Cooper in 2019 and was elected in 2020 earning 349,565 votes (65% of all voters). In 2024 Judge Marvel recieved 445,416 votes.

Currently Judge Marvel works in Domestic Court serving the families and children of Mecklenburg County. He has served as the Lead Judicial Hospitalization Judge and served on the Juvenile Delinquency Committee, Model Courts Committee, Lead Judges Committee and the Human Trafficking Task Force. Judge Marvel believes in improving the court system for everyone in Mecklenburg County.

Judge Marvel has been a longtime advocate for juveniles and children. Building on his own childhood experiences with poverty and family addiction Judge Marvel seeks to make the world a safe place for all children.

Prior to joining the bench he was an Assistant Public Defender at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office. In that role he represented countless number of our communities most vulnerable in court.

Judge Marvel is an active member of the Mecklenburg County Bar. He is a former member of the Board of Directors and Community Service Board. Judge Marvel is actively working with the Bar Leadership Institute and the Blue Star Mentorship Program. He has also led a number of 'Know Your Rights' sessions with the Mecklenburg County Bar.

An active member of the Vine United Methodist Church in Plaza Midwood Judge Marvel has been a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. As a youth, Rex went on many mission trips including building safe housing for homeless people in Juarez, Mexico.

Judge Marvel is also a former Adjunct Professor at Central Piedmont Community College where he taught legal research and writing. Judge Marvel’s love for teaching goes beyond CPCC in that he has also volunteered teaching high school students at Garinger High School and has led a number of CLE's for attorneys in our Community.

Judge Marvel is a proud father and husband living in the Plaza Midwood area of Charlotte. His wife Bonnie works at a non-profit in the University City area. His two sons love soccer, martial arts and playing with their dog Eleanor.
